A dream within a dream
It was a nightmare, truly. I remember not where I was, or when I was. The landscape barren before me, parched and scorched earth crumbling with the breeze, heavy with the stench of fire and blood. Dark clouds hung overhead, rumbling and sending reaches of lightning to the earth below. Forests ablaze, sending licking flames towards the villages. I tried to cry out and warn them, but no sound escaped me. The air was ripped from my lungs, and I fell to the ground before being swallowed into the belly of the earth. I tumbled through inky blackness so dark I couldn't even see my own body. I fell until the darkness yawned open, revealing hot molten rock so hot it could melt the skin from my bones. Tendrils of darkness grasped my limbs, binding me, whispering to me. Something was coming. Something dark and ever hungry.
The tendrils wisped around me, leeching my life force. Somehow I knew my soul was to be fed to a creature of unimaginable eldritch horror. It didn't belong here, and yet here it was, a creature of devastation without mercy. I saw only a shadow of a glimpse before I was dropped into the fiery abyss below. I shielded my face, one last attempt to save myself before I was taken to the realm beyond life. My eyes fluttered open, I yet drew breath. The sky swirled above me, dark and lurching. No light would fall upon the realm, I realized. The whispers became stronger and more demanding, filling my head with promises of power and immortality with such sweetness I could feel my resolve waning. I reached out towards the sky, the swirls now bending towards me, reaching back.
Then I remembered. I recalled who I was, already immortal, and in a fetile and peaceful land. I was the Queen, protector of my realm, the jewel, and the structure of the world. The sky hissed at my revelation, and put forth its will to crush my body. The last thing I remember before waking was feeling pressure so great it shattered my jewel, sending shards cascading into the swirls beyond realms and time. I fear this was no normal nightmare. I fear something has changed in our world, tainted it. I will hold onto this thought for now, and send paiges to the corners of the world, to see if my suspicions ring true. I hope they do not, for what may come could be even worse than The Great War.
